Dewey Preston

Jameson, 96

Dewey Preston Jameson, 96, a longtime resident of Clovis, died on Oct. 30, 2003 at the Good Samaritan Retirement Village in Las Cruces.

Jameson was born July 9, 1907, near Durant, Okla. He was married to Edna Mae Whittenburg November 2, 1929 in Durant, Oklahoma.

In 1935, the family moved from Altus, Oklahoma to the Portales and Clovis area. He worked as a farm and ranch hand and for the City of Clovis before being hired by the Santa Fe Railroad as a machinist.

In 1955, he purchased the Williams Grocery Store on Pile Street. From this business, Mr. And Mrs. Jameson and their three sons started the Jameson and Sons Supermarket in the Highland Shopping Center. They had four children: Bill, Lillie, Orvel and Bob.

After retiring from the grocery business, the couple traveled in their RV and enjoyed fishing many lakes of the southwest. After his wife’s death in 1978, Mr. Jameson lived alone, was involved in several of activities offered by the Clovis Senior Citizens and was a member of the Sandia Baptist Church. For the past three years, Jameson has lived in the Good Samaritan Retirement Village near his daughter’s home in Las Cruces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, three sons, a grandson and a great grandson.

Survivors include a daughter, Lillie Ashby of Las Cruces; 10 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Burial will be at the Portales Cemetery on Tuesday morning, November 4th following graveside services by Pastor Tim Brown of Lovington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the University Terrace Good Samaritan Village.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Portales Cemetery.

Boyd Taylor, 83

Mr. Boyd Taylor, 83, of Clovis, died Thursday evening, Oct. 30, 2003, at Laurel Plains Nursing Center in Clovis.

He was born on May 21, 1920, in Dawson County, Texas, to Ruth and Bud Taylor. At an early age, his family moved to New Mexico and settled on a ranch where he grew up. He attended schools in Elida and Dora, graduated from Dora High School in 1938, and later attended classes at ENMU. During World War II he served in the United States Navy and following his discharge worked in several occupations before becoming a farmer. He retired due to ill health in 1973 and moved to Portales.

On Oct. 28, 1939, he married Naida Jean Swafford in Portales; the couple celebrated their 64th anniversary just two days before his death. He was a member of Third and Kilgore Church of Christ, attending regularly until his health failed in recent months.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Dolphus Taylor, and two nephews, Stanley and Jeffery Taylor.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Merlin Taylor of Portales; a granddaughter, Jennifer Leigh Taylor of New Jersey; two brothers, Dennis (and his wife Frances) Taylor of Shawnee, Okla., and Bennie (and his wife Jayne) Taylor of Elida; three sisters-in-law, Maxine Polk of Lovington, Charlene (and husband Dick Weigle) of Amarillo, two aunts, Imogene Taylor of Portales and Irene Hines of Carlsbad; and many nieces and nephews.

Dan Rouse will officiate the services, assisted by Dudley Cash. Burial will be in Portales Cemetery.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Services are at 10 a.m. Monday at Third and Kilgore Church of Christ in Clovis.
