Beatrice “Bea” Newman, 89, of Clovis died March 10, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

She was born on July 8, 1914, in Floyd to Luther Lloyd and Hettie Makamson Wharton.

She graduated from Floyd High School. She married Robert Newman on Feb. 5, 1925, in Portales. They farmed in Portales for many years before moving to Clovis in 1934. She worked for Ponca Wholesale in Clovis and Roswell for many years. She was a member of Parkland Baptist Church in Clovis, the VFW Women’s auxiliary, the Benevolent and Patriotic Order of Does-Drove 108. Family members said she was active in Meals on Wheels, and would help take a friend to the doctor.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Robert Lloyd Newman; two sisters; two brothers; and her parents.

Survivord include two nieces, Londa Downing of Clovis and Lenoria Lasater of Pampa, Texas; a nephew, Terry Wharton of New Braunfels, Texas; five great-nieces; three great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; and six great-great-nephews.

Burial will be at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens in Clovis.

Herbert Bergstrom and the Rev. Doug Brooks will officiate the services.

Honorary pallbearers are Les Prien, Terry Wharton, Larry Malone, Jimmy Graham, Lonnie Leslie and Ed Brockman.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Benevolent and Patriotic Order of Does-Drove 108 in Clovis.

Arrangements are by Muffley Funeral Home of Clovis.
