Clovis High’s tennis team had a walk in the park Saturday in District 4-5A duals against Manzano at the CHS courts.

The girls lost just 16 games all day and rolled to a 9-0 win over the Lady Monarchs, improving to 3-3 in duals this year (2-2 district). Meantime, the boys won four three-set matches and registered an 8-1 win over Manzano and now stand 2-4 (1-3).

Senior Andrea Curry and junior Patricia Gallegos completed unbeaten district singles seasons for the Lady Wildcats with easy wins, giving up only one game between them. They also teamed up for a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 1 doubles.

“I’m excited Andrea and Patricia both ended up unbeaten,” CHS tennis coach Billie Merritt said. “The girls had a really good day.”

Merritt said the girls team still has hope of qualifying for postseason as the No. 2 squad in the district on a tiebreaker, pending the outcome of duals next weekend.

The boys were without two of their top six players as seniors Jared Cole, their No. 1 in singles, and Mark Gant away at a choir competition. Sophomore Adam Quintero senior Patrick Jones and freshman Jay Cole all went three sets to win in singles, while Jones and junior Michael Adams teamed up for a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win over Jesse Start and Kyle Fuerschbach at No. 2 doubles.

“Justin (Brummitt) and Adam (Quintero) played really well at No. 1 doubles,” Merritt said of a 6-2, 6-0 thumping of Trevor Tyler and Brett Thomas. “If they continue to play that way, they have a real chance of being competitive in the district tournament.

“The boys played well, considering everyone had to move up one slot.”

Track — Clovis’ boys finished second and the girls were third in Friday’s Alamogordo qualifier meet.

For the boys, junior Jacob Jones was the lone state qualifier, winning the 400 in a time of 49.74 seconds. Coach Darren Kelley noted, though, that the 800 and 1,600 relays each posted season-best times.

“The best thing is we got Jacob qualified,” Kelley said. “We wanted to improve our (400, 800 and 1,600) relay times, but we had a bad handoff on the 4-by-1.”

Junior Phillip Williams added a pair of wins for the Wildcats, taking long jump at 21 feet, 3 inches and winning the 100 in 10.93 seconds. The Cats finished with 96 points to trail only Alamo (110 1/2) in the seven-team competition.

“The kids are doing a good job,” Kelley said. “We just have to do the little things from here on out to make a difference.”

Senior Monique Walker helped two relays win for the girls in her first competition since injuring a knee in a meet at Moriarty on April 8.

The foursome of Kela Williams, Heather Malloy, Helen Morning and Walker won both the 400 relay in 49.59 seconds and the 800 relay in 1:45.93, the latter a state qualifying time. Those were the second-fastest times in the state going into the weekend, CHS girls coach Darrel Ray said.

The Lady Cats also qualified their 1,600 relay team, with Cassie Belford, Malloy, Kim Perkins and Vanessa O’Neal finishing a close second to Alamo in 4:11.2, beating their season-best time by about four seconds.

Ray said Walker will probably add the 100 and 200 in Tuesday’s Carlsbad qualifier, and compete in long jump and the medley relay three days later in the Hobbs qualifier.

“She ran very well,” Ray said. “You could tell she’s just getting into shape, but she’s such a strong runner.”
