It took nearly three hours, but the Clovis High softball team survived three rain delays in the first two innings and finally managed to claim an 8-1 victory over Hobbs on Friday night at Lady Wildcat Complex.
Senior pitcher Paige Adare tossed a two-hitter and had two hits herself, including an RBI double, as Clovis weathered delays totaling an hour and six minutes in the opener of the scheduled doubleheader.
The teams decided not to play the second game, instead opting to turn today's 9 a.m. series finale into an 8 a.m. twin bill.
With the game starting in light rain, Adare issued a walk, hit a batter and threw a wild pitch before play was stopped for 10 minutes.
Hobbs (3-18, 0-9 district) scored on a double play when Patricia Huerta was caught in a rundown between second and third, but did little the rest of the game. Adare (9-9) walked three, hit two batters and struck out seven.
Meantime, the Lady Wildcats (12-11, 3-6) got two runs in the first before working through two delays to post four runs in the second. They won handily despite leaving the bases loaded in three consecutive innings and stranding a total of 14 runners for the game.
Jordan Garrett knocked in a run with a fielder's choice and Sara Salguero followed with an RBI single in the first. Laura Wood's run-scoring single was the only hit in the second, but the Lady Cats took advantage of four walks, two hit batsmen and an error to break the game open.
Wood had an RBI fielder's choice in the fourth, and Adare doubled home the final run in the fifth.
