Clovis Head Start moves to larger location

Clovis Head Start has moved to a larger location and is inviting Clovis residents to an open house on Wednesday.

According to staff member Amanda Dawson, the new location at 901 Martin Luther King Blvd. will be able to serve 164 children, compared to 130 at the old facility on 1115 W. 2nd St. Much of that growth comes by adding a program for children 6 weeks to 3 years old, and new services for pregnant teenagers.

The program is designed to help prepare children for school and functions much like a preschool program. Everything in Head Start is free, Dawson said, including diapers and meals for children while they are in the facility.

“We primarily serve people in the community based on their income and also children with disabilities and we also serve teen pregnant moms and teen parents in Early Head Start,” Dawson said.

Dawson said Head Start doesn’t publicize its income guidelines and said families interested in the program shouldn’t decide not to apply just because they think they earn too much money.

“Just because someone has preference due to income eligibility doesn’t mean others can’t come,” Dawson said. “We do have slots saved for people over those levels.”
