The junior ROTC unit at Clovis High School has won a distinguished unit citation, according to Col. Philip Frazee, senior aerospace science instructor at the high school. Frazee received the award May 11 at the Clovis Municipal School Board meeting.
“This is the highest award the corps can get,” Frazee said. “It’s a huge achievement from (the students’) standpoint. We were one of only two units in the state to get the distinction.”
Frazee said the Clovis unit hasn’t received a distinguished unit citation since 2000 and he was glad to see the students performing well.
Other individual awards were presented at the April 24 ROTC military ball, where Frazee announced that Cadet Maj. Amber Thompson will take over command of the unit from this year’s commander, Cadet Col. Suzy Blanchette.
Frazee said only three of the 11 graduating members of the ROTC unit at Clovis plan to enlist or go to college-level ROTC programs, but that’s okay with him.
“It’s not my job to get people into the Air Force or into the military at all. The motto is building better citizens for America,” Frazee said. “What I tell these kids is whether they join the Air Force or work at Burger King or go to college, their experience will make them better citizens.”
