Jose Mere Barela, 76, of Clovis, died Sunday, June 13, 2004, in Lubbock.

He was born on Dec. 10, 1927, in Newkirk.

He married Florence Murillo in 1948 in Clovis. He served in the Army during World War II and received the Purple Heart and the Medal of Honor. Family members said he enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and camping. He worked for K-Barnett and Sons for 20 years.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Avelina Garcia; two brothers, Moises and Jimmy Barela; a sister, Nancy Sena; and a son, Steve Barela.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, David Barela (and wife, Debbie) of Clovis, Andrew Barela (Kathi) of Coliville, Wash. and Rick Barela (Kim) of Tyler, Texas; three daughters, Dolly Weis (Fred) of Pittsburgh, Susie Castillo and Kathy Perales (Bill), all of Clovis; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Edwina Matinez of Borger, Texas; and a brother, Michael Barela of Clovis.

Father Carlos Chavez will officiate the services.

Cremation has taken place.

Arrangements are by Agape Funeral Home of Lubbock.
