Some golfers are eternal pessimists.

Dave Gutierrez won the Clovis men’s city championship tournament Sunday, after a seven-year layoff from the tournament. But all he could talk about was what he could have done better.

“I just didn’t make any putts today,” he said.

Gutierrez finished Saturday with a 6-under-par 65. He finished Sunday with a 72, but that was still enough to put him three strokes ahead of the rest of the field at Clovis Municipal Golf Course.

He said he wished he could have equaled Saturday’s score.

“The course is the best I’ve seen it,” he said. “There wasn’t any reason for it except bad putting.”

Randy Moore, who won the tournament last year, but finished second to Gutierrez with a 140 this year, was more upbeat about his performance. He shot 71 on Saturday, but had the day’s best round at 69 on Sunday.

“The course was in great shape. I really enjoy playing that course and the guys I played with were great,” he said.

“I was six shots back at the beginning of the day and it was one of those days when you just go out and play the best you can. It just wasn’t good enough today.”

David Maldonado was third in the championship flight, four strokes behind the leader.

Other flight winners were Dale Shaw (President’s Flight), Mike Ramirez (First) and Angel Martinez (Second).
