Karen Elrod, 40

Ms. Karen Elrod, 40, of Portales, died Monday, July 5, 2004, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales.

She was born on May 8, 1964, in Portales, to Barbara and W. F. “Bud” Miller.

She graduated from Floyd High School in 1982. She was a cheerleader and played volleyball. In 1985, she was married to Darren Elrod. She had been an advertising representative for a number of years for the Portales News-Tribune.

Family members said she was devoted to family, and could always be counted on to help with whatever projects family members might be working on. She enjoyed photography and aroma therapy. For several years she was active in a bowling league in Clovis. She was a member of the Arbor Day Foundation.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Mae Heflin.

Survivors include a son, Terance Miller (and wife, Shayla) of Portales; two daughters, Brittany Elrod and Trisha Elrod, both of Portales; her parents; a brother, Howard Miller of Portales; a sister, Beverly Mast (Dion) of Las Cruces; her maternal grandparents, Bertha and Lewis Gregory of Floyd; her paternal grandparents, Bettie and W. F. Miller Jr. of Portales; her former husband, Darren Elrod of Portales; and a large number of other family members, most of whom make their homes locally.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Friday at Wheeler Mortuary Chapel in Portales. The Rev. Walter Huber will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers are Joe LaMier, Trampas Callaway, Bobby Martin, Victor Ramsey, Chance Carter and Brandon Griffith.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Calvin Wayne Loyd, 58

Calvin Wayne “Mickey” Loyd, 58, of Gardendale, Texas, died Sunday, July 4, 2004.

He was born on Dec. 5, 1945, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to Hilluard Calvertson and Nita Faye Loyd.

He married Sue Seward on July 30, 1987, in Wichita Falls, Texas.

Family members said he was widely known as and affectionately called the epitome of the American man. He loved life and lived every day to its fullest. He worked hard as a provider and played just as hard. Family members said he was respected by all walks of life and had a playful sense of humor. Whether fishing in his childhood town of Holliday, Texas, or riding with family and friends on his Harley, he was at his best when he was making others happy.

He was preceded in death by his mother; and three grandsons.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Tommy Wayne Seward of Dallas, Billy Ray Beasley of Wichita Falls, Texas, Toby Lynn Sanders (and wife, April) of Odessa, Texas, James Darrell Sanders (Kristi) of Brady, Texas, Cody Brent Loyd (Tina) of Odessa, Texas; two daughters, Amy Christine Seward of Wichita Falls, Texas, and Tiffany Michelle Lewis of Vernon, Texas; his father; two brothers, Tommy Lynn Loyd (Rebecca) of Portales, Larry Don Loyd (Judy) of Holliday, Texas; 17 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. (CDT) Friday at Nalley-Pickle and Welch Chapel in Midland, Texas. Arrangements are by Nalley-Pickle and Welch Funeral Home of Midland, Texas.

Eugene Wallis, 40, of Portales, died Tuesday, July 6, 2004, at the Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock.

Arrangements will be announced by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.
