Zias coach out of hospital

Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball coach Dan Buzard was released from an Albuquerque hospital Saturday but still faces treatment for a cancerous brain tumor.

Buzard, 36, had part of the eight centimeter tumor surgically removed July 25 at Albuquerque’s Presbyterian Hospital.

He said Monday that the surgery got about 70 percent of the tumor. He is recuperating at the home of his in-laws in Albuquerque.

Buzard’s wife, Jennifer, said her husband will visit an oncologist on Wednesday and a decision will be made Wednesday or Thursday on the next step — surgery to remove the remainder of the tumor, or radiation.

“He’s doing very well,” she said. “We’re just waiting to see what they tell us.”

Buzard said he anticipates doing radiation, which would be done four days a week over a five-week period. He’s optimistic about his chances of returning to work this fall.

“I’m doing a lot better than I or anyone else, especially me, thought I’d be doing,” he said. “Right now, it’s just a miracle to be where I’m at.

“Since the surgery on Monday, my attitude and energy level has just been totally different than it was before.”

Buzard became ill on July 24 while visiting his in-laws after returning a recruit to Albuquerque two days earlier.

Buzard, who is beginning his third season as the Zias’ head coach, was the Lone Star Conference South Division coach of the year in 2003-04 after leading the team to a 16-12 record, including 10-4 in division play.

He said he’s been overwhelmed by the support he’s received from family and friends.

“I’m thankful for all the prayers and support I’ve had,” he said. “Right now I’m feeling really good. I’m hoping to get back (to ENMU) in the fall and be able to get back and coach.”
