James Cicero Avery

Services: 11 a.m. (EDT) Tuesday at Christ Chapel First Presbyterian Church in Greeneville, Tenn.

James Cicero Avery, 84, of Greeneville, Tenn., a retail business owner and manager, died Saturday, Aug. 28, 2004, at his home.

He was born on Jan. 23, 1920, in Dover, N.C. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1939 until 1945 in the World War II Pacific campaign in Guadalcanal and Australia.

He received a master’s degree in education from East Carolina University, became a teacher and principal, then a sales representative for a school text publishing company. He owned and managed his own business in Clovis for over 30 years.

Family members said he enjoyed flying, traveling and visiting friends and family. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greeneville, Tenn., and Aircraft Pilots and Owners Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Ruble Avery.

Survivors include three daughters, Jill Reid of Indian Lake, N.Y., Mikki Avery of Clovis and Ginger Avery Watt (and husband, Brian) of Fairfax, Va.; a grandson, D.J. Reid of Indian Lake, N.Y.; a granddaughter, Tracy Floyd (Adam) of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; two brothers, Donald Avery of Balboa Island, Calif. and L.R. “Pete” Avery of Newport, N.C.; a sister, Cordelia Alice Johnson of Dover, N.C.; and nieces and nephews in North Carolina and California.

Dan Donaldson will officiate the services.

A private family burial will be held at the Andrew Johnson National Cemetery in Greeneville, Tenn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Smokey Mountain Home Health and Hospice, 1117 Tusculum Blvd., Greeneville, Tenn. 37745.

The Greene County Color Guard will conduct a military graveside service.
