Ruth Creighton, 94

Mrs. Ruth Creighton, 94, of Portales, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2004, at her home.

She was born on July 23, 1910, in Franklin, Texas, to Minnie and Henry Moody.

Her parents moved their family to New Mexico in the early 1920s, settling in Floyd and later in the Rogers community.

She married Curtis Creighton on Nov. 20, 1927, in Portales.

In 1940 they moved to a ranch in Elida. She worked alongside her husband milking and doing chores for many years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Elida and the Elida Woman’s Club. She moved to Portales in 1971 where she was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Family members said she loved to cook, garden, can and crochet afghans.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Finis and H.T. Moody and Wilmer Bloodworth; five sisters, Fannie Pritchard, Lucy Lyles, Alyne Haragan, Ruby Selsby and Retha Stephens; a son, John Curtis Creighton; and her husband.

Survivors include two sons, Jack Creighton (and wife, Mary) of Belen and Gene Creighton (Glenda) of Elida; five grandchildren, Gary Creighton (Ginger), Sharon Creighton Jaynes (Jim), Garland Creighton (Leslie), Lorretta Creighton and Wayland Creighton; seven great-grandchildren, Curtis, Oma, Kynzi, Kasyn and Rylan Creighton and Cynthia and Nathaniel Jaynes; a sister, Florence Ducote (Duke) of Dallas; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Bill Don Creighton of Roswell.

Services have been held. The Rev. Galen Isaacs officiated the services, assisted by the Rev. Roy Roach.

Burial was at Portales Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Garland, Gary, Bill Don, Wayland and Curtis Creighton and Jim Jaynes.

Arrangements were by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

George W. Kizer, 98

Mr. George W. Kizer, 98, of Portales, died Friday, Sept. 10, 2004, at his home.

He was born on May 23, 1906, near Hollis, Okla., to Phoebe Annie and John Strauther Kizer.

He married Bernie “Bill” Helmer on April 15, 1933, in Portales. They lived in Oklahoma for about a year before moving to Lingo, where they farmed until the mid 1950s. They then moved to a farm southwest of Portales, where they lived for 14 years. In the mid 1960s, they moved to their present home in Portales, and he worked for another 15 years on a farm for Robert Skinner. He retired in 1977. Family members said he enjoyed playing dominoes and working in his yard.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, W.R. “Willie” and J.B. Kizer; two sisters, Ruby Ann Newberry and Ida Ruth, who died as an infant; and his wife.

Survivors include two brothers, Lee Kizer of Portales and Jim Kizer of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Lena Judah of Portales and Cora Mae Judah of DeSoto, Texas.

Kenneth Morrison will officiate the services.

Services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Causey Cemetery. Burial will be at Causey Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers are Gene and Curtis Warren, Junior Smith, Mel Turnbow, Sans Skinner and Tom Davis.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Richard V. Romero, 49

Richard V. Romero, 49, of Clovis, died Thursday, Sept. 9, 2004, at University Medical Center in Lubbock.

He was born Nov. 16, 1954 to Leopoldo and Carmen Ortiz Romero in Clovis.

He was an auto detailer at Bailey Strebeck, and a member at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Family members said he was an avid Wildcat and Green Bay Packer fan and adored his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; and two brothers, Gabriel and Billy Romero.

He is survived by his parents, Leopoldo and Carmen Romero of Clovis; a daughter, Shiela Puentes of Portales; three brothers, Bennie Romero of Carlsbad, Arthur Romero (and wife, Diane) of Clovis, and Leo Romero of Rio Rancho; four sisters, Katie (Eddie) Padilla, Yolanda Olivas (Santiago), Linda Sandoval (Ruben), and Jackie Romero, all of Clovis; a grandchild, Jaden Puentes of Portales; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sunday at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Clovis.

Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Clovis. Father Sotero Sena will officiate.

Burial will be at Mission Garden of Memories in Clovis.

Pallbearers are Chris Sandoval, Gabriel Romero, Anthony Pena, Larry Jr. and Randy Granger, Eddie Padilla Jr., Johnny Jr. and Chris Sanchez.

Honorary pallbearers are co-workers of Bailey Strebeck.
