Prep notes: Fort Sumner survives game of 1A powers

The top-ranked Fort Sumner Vixens rattled off eight unanswered points in the final three minutes to beat Cimarron 40-37 this weekend in a battle of unbeaten Class 1A teams.

Tobea Patterson had a season-high 15 points to lead the Vixens.

“Things did not go right and still we beat a really good team,” Vixens coach Brian Fortner said. “Last year we lost games like this. That was the best part of tonight.”

Starters Sandy Fortner, Lindsey Mansall and Leslie Wood each picked up three fouls in the first half, but didn’t foul out.

“Last year we would have (fouled out),” coach Fortner said. “We definitely kept our composure.”

The fouls, and a lack of fouls called on Cimarron, led to a 14-2 free throw attempt advantage for Cimarron.

“I’m happy to win when we only get two free throws,” Fortner said.

Fort Sumner (9-0) went on to beat host Santa Rosa 48-44 for the tournament championship game.

Blackmon can score from anywhere

Early in the second half of Friday’s game against Lubbock Coronado, Clovis’ Brittany Blackmon took the inbound pass from under her own hoop, was unusually wide open and promptly put the ball in the basket, to the horror of teammates and fans.

“I was very, very embarrassed,” Blackmon said.

The basket started a 24-11 run for Coronado, although Clovis won 71-62.

House players receive honors

House players Lindsy Lee and Nathan Foust were named most valuable players for the House tournament.

Lee averaged 28 points a game against Roy and Hondo, while Foust averaged 27 against Hondo and Vaughn.

House’s Shannon Lane, Lee Griggs, Kris Foust, Joe Ben Snipes and Sara Lee were also named to the all-tournament team.
