Howard “Axel” Grundman, 82, of Storm Lake, Iowa, formerly from Albuquerque, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1921, in Pella, Iowa, to Ralph S. and Katherine Elvira Burtness Grundman.
He was baptized on Dec. 25, 1922, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a member of the Second Reformed Church in Pella, Iowa. He graduated from Pella High School. He attended Iowa State University for a short time, secondary to his enlistment in the service. In 1942, he entered the armed services. He served in World War II and in India-Burma and Northern Burma. During his service time, he attained the rank of first lieutenant, flight instructor, and first pilot M.A.T. in Burma/China. He was honorably discharged on May 25, 1955.
He married Elizabeth Jane West in Albuquerque. He worked at the West Furniture Store and retired in 1984. He continued to work, with his last employment being at Arnold Motor Supply in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Family members said he loved all children and enjoyed fishing, golf, cooking, all sports and was known to place an occasional wager.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and first wife Jane W. Grundman.
Survivors include his wife, Marge Grundman, of Clovis; two sons, Tom (and wife, Patty) Grundman of Hawthorne, Calif. and John (Deb) Grundman of Storm Lake, Iowa; two daughters, Katherine (Barry) Keywood of AbuDhabi, U.A.E. and Elizabeth (Don) Mahon of Arlington, Texas; his grandchildren, Jimmy, Daniel and Kevin Mahon, Jake and Kate Grundman, and Jennifer Olsen; his brother, Tom (Avis) Grundman of Cherokee, Iowa; his sister, Susan (Kenneth) Kramer of Park Forest, Ill.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other family members.
The Rev. Jamie Cutler will officiate the services.
The arrangements are by Fratzke & Jensen Funeral Home in Storm Lake, Iowa.
