Clovis basketball briefs 1-7

John Eisel: CNJ Sports Writer

Boys

Coronado (11-10) at Clovis (11-1)

7 p.m. Friday

Clovis at Goddard (2-10)

7 p.m. Saturday

Last game: Clovis lost 49-47 Tuesday at Frenship.

Last meeting with Coronado: Clovis lost 72-71 in 2 OTs in last year at Coronado.

At stake: The Cats are trying to bounce back after suffering their first loss of the season.

Coronado players to watch: Tyler Roye, P, 6-5; Seth Schulz, P, 6-5; Justin Patterson, G, Brian Corpuz, PG

Coronado scouting report: Isler said Coronado is well coached and strong defensively and offensively. Roye and Schulz can score on the inside, Patterson is an outside threat and Corpuz runs the offense. “They’ll test our defense and we’ll find out if we bounce back or not,” said Isler said, who wasn’t happy with Clovis’ defensive play Tuesday.

Notable: Senior post Tigg Bunton will likely miss the next two games. He rolled his ankle in practice Thursday, aggravating his Achilles Tendon. Isler said Bunton will sit until he’s 100 percent. “We’ve got to have him for the district run,” Isler said.

Bunton leads Clovis in scoring and rebounding, but Isler said he’s confident the rest of the team will pick up the slack.

Quotable: “It’ll tell a little bit about our character.” — Isler on the Cats regrouping after their first loss this season

By the numbers: Clovis senior Dominique Easterlin scored 26 points the last time Clovis and Coronado played. With Bunton out, Easterlin becomes Clovis’ main scoring threat in the paint.

Girls

Goddard (4-5) at Clovis (14-0)

7 p.m. Saturday

Last game: Won 48-46 Tuesday at Frenship.

Last meeting: Clovis won 62-24 last year at Goddard.

At stake: Clovis’ unbeaten record and No. 2 rank in Class 5A

Goddard scouting report: Clovis coach Miles Watters said the effort was there against Frenship, but the Lady Cats didn’t execute as well as they had been. Watters attributed the lackluster performance to a letdown after winning the Plateau Holiday Classic, playing on the road for the first time in six games, and going against a quality team like Frenship.

Quotable: “They’re not going to be a powerhouse, but they’re going to bring in a lot of players that are going to scrap and play hard.” — Watters on Goddard

By the numbers: Clovis has reached the halfway point of the regular season, with 14 games left before the start of district playoffs.
