Wolverines, Vixens win titles

TEXICO — The unbeaten Texico Wolverines and Fort Sumner Vixens claimed championships Saturday night in the EPAC basketball tournament championship games.

Texico (12-0) had to work hard to get past upstart Grady, beating the Bronchos 74-69 in the boys final, while Fort Sumner (12-0) earned a 49-35 victory over Texico in the girls title matchup.

Roosevelt County teams had a tough time on Saturday, losing all three of their matchups.

In boys action, San Jon outscored Floyd 18-8 in the final quarter to notch a 65-64 win over the Broncos in the seventh-place game. Floyd (7-6) had 12 3-pointers in the contest, getting 17 points and five 3-pointers from senior Manny Carrillo and 16 and four, respectively, sophomore Jason Martinez. Junior Jerrod Long also scored 17 points.

On the girls side, Grady held off a fourth-quarter rally by Elida to claim third place with a 53-48 win, while Floyd dropped a 45-39 overtime decision to House in the seventh-place clash.
