Junior Krissy Bowen scored Goddard’s first points on a layup with 7:12 left on the clock at Rock Staubus Gym.
By that time, Clovis had already scored 27 points and gone deep into its bench.
The rest of the game resembled a scrimmage as the unbeaten Lady Wildcats went on for a 66-33 win.
Senior Roxanne Luera hit four 3-pointers and scored a team-high 17 points for Clovis, which led 53-22 at halftime.
“She’s a really capable shooter,” Watters said. “She just keeps playing a little bit better as the season progresses. She’s getting her confidence to score big at this level.”
Goddard coach Troy Grant said his young team, which is made up mostly of sophomores, didn’t adjust to Clovis’ quickness until it was too late.
“Honestly, I can say we haven’t played a team as good as Clovis,” Grant said. “I wouldn’t be surprised to see them in the finals in 5A.”
Only Bowen kept the game from becoming even more lopsided. She hit four 3-pointers and scored 16 points in the second quarter on the way to a game-high 18 for the Class 4A Lady Rockets (4-7).
Brittany Blackmon added 12 points for the Lady Cats, who are ranked second in Class 5A.
The clock rarely stopped in the second half as Clovis was up more than 35 points, enacting the mercy rule. The game lasted about an hour.
Watters said the best part of the night was getting some players on the court that don’t normally see much playing time.
“They are really good team players and role players and I’m glad they got on the floor tonight,” Watters said.
Senior Stacey Corley, sophomore Siobhan Flatow, senior Merichia Floyd, junior Jessica Russell and senior Raquel McCullom played the entire fourth quarter.
“To me personally, it meant a lot that I got to perform in front of the crowd, but I know it meant a lot to the other girls, too,” McCullom said. “It helps a lot because I get to go out and play in front of the fans.”
