Albert C. Gonzales, 84, of Fort Sumner, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at Eastern New Mexico Medical Center in Roswell.

He was born on Aug. 26, 1920, in Guadalupe, to Coldoveo Gonzales and former Amadita Casaus.

He worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the final construction of the Alamogordo Dam Project. He married Louisa Lopez on Dec. 6, 1941, in Fort Sumner. He served in the U.S. Army with Company A, 83rd Infantry. He worked as a cowboy, and as a mechanic.Family members said he was an avid song writer, singer and an accomplished player of the guitar, fiddle, accordion and steel guitar, and dance. He was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Jose Alberto Gonzales Jr.; four brothers, Leandro, James, Arturo, and Cornelio ‘Smokey’ Gonzales.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mary Ann Delgado (and husband, Rito) and Melba Torres (Alejandro Jr.), all of Roswell, and Rosie Carter of Portales; four sons, George Gonzales (Ruby) of Fort Sumner, Fred Gonzales (Betty) of Clovis, Joe Frank Gonzales (Diana) of Roswell, and Steve Gonzales (Cheryl) of Las Vegas, N.M.; 15 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fort Sumner.

Father Sotero A. Sena will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Fort Sumner Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Richard, Michael, Jeremy, Joseph, Vicente and Bradley Gonzales, Nicky and Matthew Delgado, and Christopher Carter.

Honorary bearers will be all his grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday at Chavez Funeral Home.

Arrangements are by Chavez Funeral Home of Fort Sumner.
