Board supports wellness center

The Clovis school board Tuesday night approved a resolution in support of the $7.5 million Wellness and Youth Development Center proposed for construction at Spencer Park.

The center would supply Clovis with a regulation-sized pool for community use and use by the Clovis swim team.

“As the city commission is going forward with their legislative request (for project money), we are in support of that,” said interim schools superintendent, G.C. Ross.

Board members raised concerns that Clovis schools might have trouble funding their part of the usage of the facility, Ross said. However, he said the schools would do their best to support swimming programs, just as they financially support the other sports.

Today the Clovis swim team cannot hold any swim meets in town because there isn’t an adequate facility with a regulation-sized pool, he said. The new facility would allow meets to be held in Clovis, so the team could save some traveling costs.

Clovis City Commissioner Cathy Haynes said the city would actually own the facility when it is constructed. She said money is being sought from private industry, as well.
