The Texico girls were the tough-luck team on the basketball court this week.
Up 39-38 on Friday at home with a few seconds left, Santa Rosa’s game-winning attempt bounced off the rim, but 5-foot-2 junior guard Reena Tenorio snuck into the paint and put it back in for the victory.
“We played an awful good game, we played extremely good defense,” Texico coach Buddy Little said. “It just didn’t fall our way tonight.”
Little said the Lady Wolverines had a six-point lead with 90 seconds left, but poor shooting decisions gave Santa Rosa the chance to come back.
The Lady Wolverines (11-5, 2-1 District 6-2A) competes in what Little calls the “toughest district in the state.”
Texico started off district play with road wins at Clayton and Tucumcari before the loss at home.

When is a blow out game not a blow out? When teams start missing free throws.
Melrose had more than a 20-point lead in the fourth quarter in their game Friday at home against Fort Sumner. Melrose went to free-throw line, where they could have iced the game, but they kept missing. And missing. And missing.
By the time the fourth quarter ended, the Buffaloes had missed 10 of 12 free throws in the quarter. Still, they escaped with a 75-70 win in their District 3-1A opener.

Carlos Saenz hasn’t played many minutes off the bench for Farwell this season, but coach Clint Conkin had a tough time taking him off the court last Tuesday night against Hart.
Saenz made nine shots, including three 3-pointers as the Steers kept the scorekeeper busy with an 88-54 win over Hart.
Teammate Tate Nichols also hit nine shots, but had an extra 3-pointer in scoring 23 points.
The Steers scored 27 points in the first quarter and never had less than 18 in a period the rest of the way.
