Edgar L. Baker, 70

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Portales Cemetery.

Mr. Edgar L. Baker, 70, of Portales, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at Heartland Continuing Care Center in Portales.

He was born on Aug. 27, 1934, in Portales, to Essie and Sidney A. Baker. He lived most of his life in Portales except for a brief time he was in California, and the time he served in the Army from 1957 until 1959. For a number of years he worked as the janitor and parts chaser for the local Chevrolet dealership. In the mid 1980s he went to work at Sunland Peanuts where he was employed as a janitor. He was a member of the Third and Kilgore Church of Christ and also of VFW Post 9515.

Family members said he enjoyed cars and even did some racing. He also liked to build model cars and was a good pool player, they said.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a nephew, Bobby Givens.

Survivors include a sister, Mary Taylor (and husband, Bob) of Ramah; two nieces, Mary Kay Maloney (Bert) of Portales and Cindy Givens (Tim) of Happy, Texas; five great-nieces and nephews, Julie Pena, Jack and Melissa Maloney, Valerie Struve and Jeremy Givens; and three great-great-nephews, Anthony and Jonathan Pena and Tye Struve.

David Bennett will officiate the services.

Honorary pallbearers are members of VFW Post 9515.

Arrangements are by Wheeler Mortuary of Portales.

Vera Holloway, 81

Services: 3 p.m. (EST) Sunday at the Chapel of Watson-Matthews Funeral Home in Montezuma, Ga.

Mrs. Vera Johnson Holloway, 81, of Milan, Ga., died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005.

She was born on Feb. 19, 1923, in Macon County, Ga., to Lester and Myrtie Smith Johnson. She had lived most of her life in Oglethorpe, Ga., where she retired from Macon County Medical Center as a nurse. She and her husband ran the city pool in Oglethorpe for several years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Murray Holloway; a sister, Faye Wilson; and a grandson, Michael Slocumb.

Survivors include a son, James E. Holloway of Portales; two daughters, Kathy H. Baase of Soperton, Ga., and Kam H. Boone of Milan, Ga.; three sisters, Ellene Hart and Jeanette Geller, both of Lithia Springs, Ga. and Vernice Collins of Largo, Fla.; 18 grandchildren, Greg Tanner of New Smyrna Beach, Fla., Brandi Holloway of Winter Haven, Fla., Jeff Holloway of Charleston S.C., Rachel Arago of Colorado Springs, Colo., Grant and Elizabeth Drummond and Gwendolyn Steves, all of Pueblo, Colo., Seth, Celeste, Joel, Annamoriah, Elias and Enoch Holloway and Ruth Carling, all of Portales, William Slocumb of Hapeville, Ga., Ashley Slocumb of Soperton, Ga., Jason and Brandon Boone, both of Milan, Ga.; and nine great-grandchildren.

The Rev. Dale McConnel will officiate the services.

Burial will be at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Georgia.
