Foxes, Vixens sweep past Elida

FORT SUMNER — Junior forward Jeremy Gaunana scored 22 points Friday night as Fort Sumner posted a season high in points in an 85-63 District 3-1A win over Elida.

The Foxes (13-6, 3-1 district) outscored Elida 27-11 in the third quarter to break away from a 35-35 halftime tie.

Junior guard Derek Dimitroff was the only other Fort Sumner player in double figures with 15 points, but seven other Foxes finished with between five and eight points.

The Tigers (11-7, 1-2) put four players in double figures, led by senior Dylan Radcliff with 19 points.

Meantime, the unbeaten Fort Sumner girls (19-0, 4-0) took over sole possession of the district lead with a 56-29 win over Elida.

Senior guard Sandy Fortner scored 17 points for the Vixens, while senior forward Lindsey Mansell added 14 and senior point guard Leslie Wood chipped in 11.

Fort Sumner held the Lady Tigers (12-6, 2-1) to eight field goals for the game.

Sophomore guard Alicia Cross-Smith topped Elida with seven points.

Dora-Melrose — At Melrose, the host Buffaloes got three 3-pointers and 22 points from junior guard Carlos Ruiz in a 72-50 District 3-1A boys victory over the Coyotes.

Dora (5-15, 0-3) led 16-15 after one quarter, but was outscored 44-22 over the next two stanzas as Melrose (14-4, 3-0) took control.

Senior post Caleb Dodd added 17 points while guards Jeremy Weese and Cedar Rush chipped in 10 apiece. Junior forward Tyler Wilhoit scored 12 points to lead the Coyotes.

Melrose also took the girls matchup, winning 54-41 behind 15 points from freshman guard Ta’Neil Roberts and 10 from sophomore guard Lauren Widner.

The Lady Buffaloes (9-10, 2-1) led just 24-23 at halftime, but pulled away with a 13-5 scoring advantage in the final quarter.

Senior guard Jena Bilberry scored nine points for the Lady Coyotes (8-10, 0-3).

Floyd-Tucumcari — In non-district girls action at Tucumcari, sophomore guard Samantha Montano converted four consecutive free throws in the final minute to break a tie and lift the host Lady Rattlers to a 42-38 victory over Floyd.

Junior center Jamie Jones led all scorers with 25 points for Tucumcari (8-8). The Lady Rattlers outscored Floyd 13-7 in the third quarter to erase a four-point halftime deficit.

Senior Noel Carpenter led for the Lady Broncos (8-12), finishing with nine points.

Tucumcari’s boys overcame a one-point deficit by outscoring Floyd 15-2 in the second quarter and the Rattlers went on to a 62-40 victory.

Senior guard Matthew Braziel had 19 points and junior forward Eric Holt added 17 for Tucumcari (9-9). Junior guard Jerrod Long led the Broncos (10-10) with 12 points.
