ROSWELL — In their first action of the year, the Portales boys and girls tennis teams each ended up in the third-place match on Saturday in the Goddard Invitational.
From that point, it was a story of small breaks — the girls got them and finished third, while the boys didn’t and finished fourth in the two-day, eight-team event.
“It was good for us to get to play,” Portales tennis coach Bill Wahlman said. “A number of the teams in the tournament had already played matches.”
The Portales girls needed a 6-0, 4-6, 7-5 doubles win from Jessica Bulls and Morgan Erf to pull out a 5-4 verdict over Roswell High in their third-place match. Wahlman said the third set was close throughout, with ties at 4-4 and 5-5 before Self and Erf pulled away.
Rachelle Self, Erf and Bulls (Nos. 1-3 in singles, respectively) each went 2-1 for the day.
Also playing for Portales were Whitney Miller (No. 4 singles, No. 2 doubles with Self), Tamara Stroik (No. 5 singles) and Lindsey Woodard (No. 6 singles, No. 3 doubles with Stroik).
For the boys, the third-place match didn’t go as well, as host Goddard claimed four of the six singles flights to edge Portales 5-4.
Wahlman said the No. 5 singles match between Bronson Riser and Teddy Wenner of Goddard, won by Wenner 4-6, 7-5, 6-2, could have gone either way.
Chance Plummer (No. 1 singles) and Matt Tucker (No. 6 singles) each went 2-1 for the afternoon.
Also playing for Portales were Logan Brown (No. 2 singles, No. 1 doubles with Plummer), Chase Acker (No. 3 singles) and Nathan Acker (No. 4 singles, No. 2 doubles with Chase Acker). The Ackers and the No. 3 doubles team of Riser and Tucker both went 2-1.
