District 4-5A

Boys

Carlsbad (5-18, 0-6) at Clovis (19-5, 3-3)

7:30 p.m. today

Last game: Clovis lost at Hobbs 85-72. Carlsbad lost to Cibola 59-54.

Last meeting: Clovis beat Carlsbad 70-64 on Feb. 1.

At stake: The Wildcats are trying to stay in the District 4-5A race.

Carlsbad players to watch: Alex Bustos, PG, 6-0, 165, Jr.

Scouting report: Clovis coach J.D. Isler expects the Cavemen to play a zone defense , which means the Wildcats must hit shots from the outside to keep Carlsbad from collapsing on Clovis senior P Tigg Bunton, the team’s leading scorer.

The Cavemen like to spread the floor and create dribble penetration opportunities for their guards.

Isler said Clovis needs to rebound better than in the team’s previous meeting.

“That was pretty frustrating because we were a lot bigger and I don’t think our players will let it happen again,” Isler said.

Notable: Isler said starting Clovis senior P Dominique Easterlin rolled his ankle in practice on Monday and is 50/50 for tonight.

Quotable:“We just have to worry about the things we can control.” — Isler on the District 4-5A race.

By the numbers: The Wildcats will honor six seniors tonight: Bunton, Easterlin, Elliott Hita, Jacob Jones, Tizrick Phillips and John Props.

Scouting report: In the teams’ previous meeting, Clovis tried to force the ball inside with mixed success.

Carlsbad players to watch: Carolyn Smith, G.

Quotable: “Tomorrow could be the start of hopefully a good week.” — Clovis coach Miles Watters.

By the numbers: The Cavegirls turned the ball over 30 times in the teams’ first meeting.

Monday

o Audrey Hemminger, Melrose, scored 17 points and Schuyler Cochran added 15 as the Lady Buffaloes topped Dora 56-38 in the first round of the District 3-1A tournament.

Melrose coach Jason Lee said his team outmanned Dora, which only suited six players. Lee said Dora really started to get tired in the late third and early fourth quarters.

The Lady Buffaloes will play at Elida at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the tournament semifinals.

o Despite William Genitski’s 12 points, Clovis Christian’s first district tournament ended in the second round with a 68-45 loss at San Jon in District 4-1A.

Clovis Christian coach Jimmy Joe Robinson said his team had trouble putting down shots, especially from inside.

The Eagles finish the season 11-17, up from 5-22 last year.

“We’ve come up a little,” Robinson said.

Boys

Bi-district

Muleshoe (17-13) vs. Canyon (15-13)

5:30 p.m. Hereford High School

Canyon scouting report: Muleshoe coach Ralph Mason said Canyon is better than their 15-13 record indicates. The Eagles had a tough non-district schedule with a lot of playoff and 5A teams.

Canyon likes to control the tempo. Mason thinks the Mules can take advantage of the Eagles with quickness.

He also believes his team can take care of Canyon’s staple of mid 6-foot players, but he’s concerned about allowing open shots on the perimeter.

Canyon players to watch: Michael Lough, P; Tanner Martin, W.

Notable: The winner will move on to play 28-4 Merkel.

By the numbers: This will be the Mules’ first playoff game in five years.

Girls

Muleshoe (23-8) vs. Abilene Wylie (29-6)

5 p.m. Lamesa High School

Last game: Muleshoe beat Merkel 43-34. Abilene Wylie beat Borger 66-63.

Scouting report: Muleshoe coach Shana Simms said Wylie likes to press and push the tempo, just like the Lady Mules.

Abilene Wylie runs its offense through P Courtney Laing. If teams try to collapse on her, she’ll kick the ball out to the perimeter.

Players to watch: Courtney Laing, P, 6-0.

Notable: The winner will face the winner of Glen Rose and Pilot Point on Friday

Quotable: “They’re a carbon copy of us.” — Simms on Wylie.

By the numbers: Wylie hit only 14 of 37 free throws in its victory over Borger on Friday.
