CARLSBAD — Clovis moved within a game of a perfect regular season by beating Carlsbad 61-26 Tuesday in a District 4-5A game.
The Lady Cats (25-0, 7-0) host Sandia (18-4, 6-1) Friday in a showdown for the district title.
At Carlsbad, Clovis erased any doubts of an upset bid by holding the Cavegirls to two points in the third quarter.
“It was a good road victory,” Clovis coach Miles Watters said. “We rarely play well at Carlsbad and we really came out with a great effort tonight and took care of business.”
Clovis had a well-rounded scoring effort as junior posts Brittany Blackmon and Aimee Hilburn scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, while freshman Ebony Bunton scored 10.
He said Carlsbad’s zone defense forced Clovis to shoot from the outside, and the Lady Cat outside shooters came through. Tori Quintana continued her impressive 3-point shooting streak with three more for nine points, raising her total to 22 in the last five games.
“We’ll take them any way we can get them but its nice when everybody can contribute at the offensive end,” Clovis coach Miles Watters said.
Watters said Bunton had the best game of the night, coming off the bench. Besides her 10 points, she also had some big offensive rebounds.
Carlsbad leading scorer Carolyn Smith was limited to nine points.
“Melissa Roberts really contained her well,” Watters said.
