Anniversary:

Burton

Bob and Hazel Burton of Corona celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on March 19 at Corona Recreation room. The celebration was hosted by family.

The couple was married March 15, 1955 in Fort Sumner.

They have four children, 17 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He is a general contractor. She is a housewife and part-time teacher’s aide.

Alexander

Johnae Carissa Jobe of Sierra Vista, Ariz. and Kentreal Lamonza Alexander of Fayetteville, N.C. were joined in marriage Feb. 18 at Shalimar Chapel in Las Vegas, Nev.

The bride is the daughter of Nancy and Johnny Jobe of Clovis. The bridegroom is the son of Joyce Alexander and William Francis of Glasgow, Ky.

The couple will reside in Sierra Vista. Both the bride and groom are employed with the U.S. Army.

Club Notes:

Fairfield Extension Club

Fairfield Extension Club met on March 11 at the extension building to host our club exchange with Claud Rainy Day Club. There were 16 members present from Fairfield Club and six members present from the Claud club. Vice-president Jean Hardinof Fairfield brought her mother Mimmie Price as a guest.

We had a white elephant auction with Martha Watkins and Jo Mae Priest as auctioneers. We used play money for our bidding. Betty Ingram had donated a crocheted afghan for the door prize won by Lois Hollingsworth from Claud. All enjoyed an Irish meal of beef stew, cornbread, fruit and vegetable relish trays and dessert. Decorations were for St. Patrick’s Day.

Our next event will be the cultural arts and membership event in April. Enter crafts for judging on April 6 at the extension building. The membership event is on April 7 at 5:30 p.m. Those interested in becoming a member of an extension club may attend.

Encanto Garden Club

Blake Curtis with Curtis and Curtis Seed Company gave a program on “Grasses and Wildflowers” when the Encanto Garden Club met on March 9 at the Senior Citizen Retirement Center for a brunch and to honor B.J. Goodwin.

Curtis gave everyone a product catalog with complete horticulture of each grass, legume, tree, shrub, wildflower, and a grass sample. He closed his presentation with a poem on reincarnation.

President Betty Dunap opened the business meeting with the “Gardener’s Prayer.” She welcomed guests Nell Hodge of Hereford, Texas, Helen Defoor of Texico, Mary Tate of Ranchvale, and Keaton Remo and Thelma Curtis of Clovis.

Karen Allen read the minutes of the last meeting followed by a financial report from Jane Rybolt.

Dunlap gave information on gardening chores to do in March: Transplanting, pruning, ripeness and harvesting of tomatoes; season weather averages for Clovis, and the moon phases for 2005.

Door prizes were won by Maggie Moore, Bess Kline and Elsie Dean.

Altrusa International, Inc.

The members of Altrusa International, Inc. of Clovis met at Muffley's Backdoor for their regular program meeting on Monday. President Kathy Travis called a short business meeting to address a few items.

The club voted to postpone the garage sale scheduled for March 19, because of possible bad weather. It will be rescheduled at a later date. The proposed slate of officers for next year were read as follows: Kathy Travis, president; Phyllis Davidson, vice president; Carolyn Sherman, recording secretary; Jennifer Gomez, corresponding secretary; Marty Thorsen and Marjorie Watkins, one-year board members; and JoAnne Winslow, two-year board member.

Director of multi-cultural affairs at Clovis Community College LaTanya Lowery presented a program. She talked about the upcoming women’s conference to be held at the school on April 1. The club voted to have a booth at the conference to promote Altrusa, and sell cookbooks and angel pins.

The evening closed with discussion of posters to be made promoting Altrusa. The posters will be entered in a poster contest which will be held at district conference in April and then displayed in Clovis. The next meeting is a business meeting on March 22.

Rebekah Lodge Friendship

Evelyn Calder and Vicky Howard hosted the Jan. 11 meeting at the Oddfellow Hall. District deputy president Allene Luther installed noble grand Eveleyn Calder; vice grand Serna Goar; secretary-treasurer Mary Dorris; and chaplain Vicky Howard. This was the last meeting before a two-month recess. Meeting will resume March 22 with the assembly president’s visit.

Sandi McWatters was installed assembly president of New Mexico in Albuquerque during October. She lives in Albuquerque and will visit each Rebekah Lodge this year. Her main project is breast cancer.

Friendship Rebekah Lodge meets on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Oddfellow Hall.

Clovis Drove #108

Clovis Drove #108 of the Benevolent Patriotic order of Does hosted the New Mexico South/Douglas, Ariz. district meeting on March 4-5. National grand lodge supreme president Ellen Tomberlin and her husband Larry were welcomed. The public ceremony was held on Friday night at the Holiday Inn.

Tomberlin became the 84th Supreme President of the Benevolent Patriotic Order of Does of the U.S.A. and was installed in her home state of New Mexico during the Grand Lodge Convention held in Albuquerque, June 2004.

Tomberlin began her quest with the Gallup Drove #164, as she advanced through the chairs to be Drove president, served on various committees, received many Grand Lodge appointments until elected to serve as supreme outer guard. As an elected supreme officer, Tomberlin realized the many different ways the BPO Does can help their communities and promote the organization’s charitable activities on a national scale.

Tomberlin selected the theme “Does Making a Difference” believing working as a group, we can strengthen our communities, help our veterans, servicemen and women along with our families. Tomberlin has chosen flag pins of red, white and blue as a symbol of her year’s reign and wears them proudly.

Tomberlin will preside over the School of Instruction as each Drove exemplifies the ritual floor work. Tomberlin has left our district and continues on her travels to the other districts until the National convention in June in Sarasota, Fla.
