Lovington broke a scoreless tie with a six-run seventh and defeated the Portales High Lady Rams 6-0 on Tuesday at the PHS softball field, earning a split of their District 4-3A doubleheader.
The Lady Rams (14-8) won the opener 6-3. With the split, the teams share the district lead with 3-1 records.
Sophomore Sasha Parker pitched a seven-hitter in the opener, walking one and striking out five, and the Lady Rams erased a 3-2 deficit for the win.
Portales, which led 2-0 after an inning, fell behind in the fourth, but countered with one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth for the victory.
Amanda Terry went 3-for-4 and Shareesa Nusser added 2-for-3 for the Lady Rams, who collected nine hits.
The teams battled through six scoreless innings in the nightcap before the Lady Wildcats broke through in the seventh against Nusser on a walk, a throwing error and eighth-grader Janette Sandoval’s run-scoring single.
The Lady Wildcats (10-10) sent 11 batters to the plate in the frame, scoring their runs on just three hits.
Sophomore Chelsea Moreno, who took the loss in the opener, pitched a four-hit shutout for Lovington, with two walks and two strikeouts.
