James Woods

Lt. Colonel James Jerry Woods (Ret.), 48, died Sunday, June 26, 2005 in Doha, Qatar.

He was born Dec. 2, 1956, in South Ruislip, England. He served in the Army for 21 years and wore the Parachutist Badge, Ranger Tab, Pathfinder Badge, Expert Infantryman’s Badge, and earned his Combat Infantryman’s Badge during Operation Just Cause in Panama. His top tier medals included the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service, Army Commendation and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. He served in many stateside and overseas assignments including Italy, Panama, and Germany. Jim retired in 1998 to Florida where he taught Junior ROTC at Booker High School in Palmetto, Fla. After the events of September 11th, he returned to the service of his country as an Army contractor working in Qatar in direct support of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Before being commissioned into the Army, Jim received his bachelors in journalism from the University of Central Arkansas. He later returned to UCA to teach ROTC and earn his Masters Degree in Public Media. Jim loved to travel and boasted of visiting nearly every country in the world.

Survivors include his mother Mary Woods Fulcher of Grady; his father Ed Woods of Atkins, Ark .; a grandmother, Gladys Woods Holland of North Little Rock, Ark .; brothers Lt. Colonel Edwin Woods of Mons, Belgium, and Thomas Woods of Tok, Alaska; and sister Kim Woods Gorter of Little Rock, Ark .; and 12 nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be 2 to 4 p.m. Monday at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home in Little Rock, Ark.

Burial will be with full military honors at Arkansas State Veterans’ Cemetery in North Little Rock immediately following the service.
