New DoD policy prohibits using cell phones while on the road

Effective Monday, vehicle operators on Cannon will not use cell phones unless the vehicle is safely parked or they are using a hands-free device, according to an updated Department of Defense Joint Motor Vehicle Traffic Supervision Regulation.

The regulation further says that the wearing of portable headphones, earphones, or other listening devices, except for hands-free cellular phones while operating a motor vehicle, is prohibited.

Using a cell phone while driving without a hands-free device will be considered a primary offense, meaning that violators can be stopped solely for this offense.

According to the National Transporation Safety Board, there has been an increase in the number of traffic accidents related to cell phone use while driving.

“Violators will be cited with either an Armed Forces traffic ticket or a United States District Court Violation Notice,” said Tech. Sgt. Rich Jones, 27th Security Forces Squadron.
