Portales schedules pep rally

With just three state football championships to its credit, the last one in 1988, Portales is poised to cheer its team on with a community pep rally at 5:30 p.m. tonight on the Roosevelt County Courthouse steps.

According to Ram Booster Club President Shelley Stanley the club always works to support the team but the community support right now for the team and the pep rally is mushrooming.

“(We got the community pep rally started) just to show our support and to show the coaches and kids that we’re behind what they’re doing,” said Stanley, whose son is Ram quarterback Chris Mosier. “We hope they’ll be able to provide a role model for the younger kids.”

The Ram football team will face Las Vegas Robertson at 2 p.m. Saturday at Greyhound Stadium in the state 3A championship.

Besides the team, the pep rally will feature the Portales High School cheerleaders in action as well as the Ram marching band.

Mayor Orlando Ortega Jr. is expected to sign a proclamation declaring Friday and Saturday as “Ram Pride Days” and urging everyone to wear red.

Stanley says she feels like the fan support has been a big encouragement for the team this season.

“It just gave them an extra incentive,” Stanley said of the support. “We had lots of fans walking the sidelines at the out-of-town playoff games.”

She says she hopes the community turns out for the pep rally and the game to continue that support.

“We want to get the stands full of red,” Stanley said.
