Portales streets will once again light up as the annual lighted Christmas parade and downtown Christmas Jubilee celebration are set to take place, beginning at 6:30 p.m. today.
Sponsored by the Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce, various events will be held throughout the evening, said Amie Franz, RCCC. A stage will be set up in the parking lot of the Roosevelt County Courthouse where choirs from the Portales Junior High and Portales High school will be performing, beginning at 6 p.m. Master Works, a local christian group,will also be providing entertainment. The entertainment groups will stop performing as the parade passes the square, then resume after the parade and crowning of the little miss merry christmas contestants, said Franz.
“It’s a great way to help the community kick off the holiday season,” said Franz.
Five local girls, ranging in age from 4 to 6 years old, are running for the title of little miss merry christmas, said Kylee Webster, organizer. The winner will be chosen by the amount of money that is raised by placing jars around town to collect money. Other fundraisers such as bake sales and silent auctions are used to help raise money also. Funds raised by the contestants will be used to buy Christmas lights for the city, said Webster.

The crowning of little miss merry christmas will take place on Friday after the conclusion of the Christmas Lighted Parade on the square.
Held in conjunction with the festivities, will be the second annual Portales Mainstreet Winter Wine Fest. The event will be held at The Ice House-Bobo signs, said Jeremy Sturm, community development director. Wines will be provided by the Tularosa Vineyards Winery. Tickets are $25 each and the price will include a souvenir glass, one glass of your choice of wine and samples, said Sturm.
“It’s quite an event, we have a lot of fun,” said Sturm.
During the evening, live entertainment will be provided by Mo Perry, said Sturm. hors d’ oeuvres, cheese and fruit will also be served. Proceeds from the ticket sales will be used for the Portales Mainstreet program, said Sturm.
“Last year, we had over 100 people attend,” he said.
Currently their are 18 entries for the parade. Entries are still being accepted for the parade. Winners will be chosen in three categories, non-profit, business and churches. The winners in each category will receive a traveling plaque, said Franz.
