Dora boys take top district 3-1A seed

The Dora Coyotes earned the District 3-1A regular season championship and the district tournament number one seed that comes with it, after defeating the Floyd Broncos 52-38 Thursday night at home.

According to Dora head coach Ty Thatcher, the Coyotes (20-5, 7-1) took advantage of soft defense in the first half, and sank six 3-pointers, before playing in the paint in the second half. 12 of Dora’s 24 second half points came from the free throw line.

“We played a pretty quality game,” Dora head coach Ty Thatcher said. “We didn’t control the tempo like I thought we should have. They kind of played us soft ... and then they came out and guarded us in the second half.”

Floyd stayed close through the first period, as Dora led 16-14, but the Coyotes took control in the second period. Dora outscored Floyd 12-4 in the second quarter, to give the Coyotes a 28-18 half-time advantage.

The margin stayed at 10 points, through the third quarter, before Dora re-gained control in the fourth quarter outscoring Floyd 15-11 to win the game by 14 points.

Dora junior Wesley Skelley led all scorers with 19 points, followed by senior Ryan Craig’s 10 points.

Thatcher’s crew understands the benefit of the district tournament top seed.

“It’s definitely huge,” Thatcher said. “It gives you a chance to watch the other teams play and prep for them while they’re working. The disadvantage is you’re idle for a week.”

The complete District 3-1A tournament bracket is expected to be released this weekend.
