The Portales Lady Rams had pitching in one game, and hitting in the other in a doubleheader split at Jal Tuesday with the Lady Panthers taking the first game 1-0, and the Portales girls winning the second game 8-3.
Although senior pitcher Sasha Parker threw a one-hitter for the Rams (2-5) in game one, Jal senior thrower Melinda Vargas managed a two-hitter as the home team beat Portales 1-0.
“(The first game) was a pitchers battle for sure,” Lady Ram head coach Robbie Crowley said. “Sasha threw the ball really well. We had a couple of times where we had some breakdowns and gave up some errors in that first game that we shouldn’t have.”
Crowley also had kind words for the Jal pitcher.
“The kid that they pitched the first game was pretty good,” Crowley said. “She may be one of the toughest ones that we see this year.”
With the number two pitchers starting, the bats came alive in the second game.
Outfielder Danielle Vasquez went 2-for-3, and fellow senior Jessica Adkins brought in two runs as the Lady Rams won game two 8-3.
Senior Courtney Correll went 2-for-4 including a third inning double.
“I’m not disappointed at all,” Crowley said. “I’m actually really excited about what we have to build on.”
The Lady Rams travel to Roswell Tuesday for a doubleheader before returning home for their home opener Monday afternoon against Loving.
