A trio of Portales Ram sophomores made a big statement in the Rams first golf tournament of the season at Clovis’ Chaparral Country Club Monday afternoon.
Portales sophomore Donavin Sanchez managed to overcome a rough start to run away with the best overall score and lead the Portales boys to a dominating victory.
The Portales boys posted a team score of 307, followed by Clovis’ 333 and Clovis Christian’s 371.
“I didn’t expect 300 something,” Portales boys coach Pat Crowley said. “I was really looking for 313 or 314 but I’ll take 307 every day of the week.”
Sanchez began his round with bogeys on the first two holes, added a double-bogey on the second nine, but finished with a tournament best score of 71.
“He’s two over after two (holes),” Crowley said. “He did a great job of settling down and hit some quality golf shots. He played really, really solid.”
Rick Bergman took second, five strokes behind Sanchez with 76, and Portales’ third sophomore, William Archibeque finished tied with senior teammate Jefferson Powers with a one-round score of 80.
Sanchez and Bergman qualified for the state golf tournament as well as helping Portales qualify as a team.
“We had a couple of kids not play quite up to their expectations but that’s OK,” Crowley said.
Portales senior Tori Teague qualified for state on the girls side, posting the third best score of 89. Lindsey Woodard shot a 95.
