Portales’ two senior hurlers pitched well at Roswell High and managed a split with the Lady Coyotes, losing the first game 4-0 and winning the second contest 2-0 in pre-district softball doubleheader action Tuesday night.
“I’m excited,” Lady Ram head coach Robbie Crowley said. “Roswell’s got a great ball team.”
Lady Ram Sasha Parker pitched the first game and after giving up two runs in the first inning, held the potent Roswell High bats scoreless in four of the final six innings, giving up four hits.
“She pitched really well,” Crowley said. “I’ll take credit for some of those hits because I had my outfielders a little too deep and they hit in between us.”
The Lady Ram bats came alive just enough in the second game, and senior pitcher Shareesa Nusser pitched shut-out ball to earn the split for Portales.
After a scoreless first two innings in the second game, Courtney Correll brought in fellow senior Danielle Vasquez with an RBI single in the third inning, followed by a Roswell High error in the seventh to give Portales their two runs.
Crowley said coming back on the road against a quality team like Roswell High is a good sign.
“I’m proud of the kids,” Crowley said. “I think they bounced back in that second game, and overcame some adversity in that second game and proved to themselves that they have what it takes.”
The Lady Rams (3-4) welcome the Loving Lady Falcons for two games in Portales’ home opener Tuesday, before heading to the annual Artesia Tournament March 30.
“I’m really excited about the rest of the season,” Crowley said.
