Active Elida bats complemented a live Elida arm as the Tigers used two five-run innings to beat Floyd 12-1 in five innings Monday night.
Junior pitcher Wesley Gilmore confounded the Broncos, allowing one run on three hits. Gilmore struck out 10.
“He threw very well,” Elida coach Jimmy Ward said. “We’re about to get our arms in shape and we’re fixing to get on a roll, I hope.”
Gilmore also provided a spark on offense. After Tom Sullivan’s first-inning, two-run home run, Gilmore added a two-run blast of his own in the second inning. Fellow junior Dan Massey followed that with a solo shot to give Elida a 5-1 lead. The Tigers posted two more runs in the second inning to lead 7-1 heading into the third.
After scoreless third and fourth innings, Elida ended the game with a five-run fifth.
Ward was also pleased with Gilmore’s performance in the batter’s box.
“Wesley kind of came out of his slump tonight,” Ward said. “The bottom of the lineup is still going to have to have some more work, but we did score some runs in the bottom of the lineup.”
The Tigers (5-4) host San Jon today before traveling to Texico Thursday.
