The Portales Rams dominated the first game of a District 4-3A doubleheader at Lovington 15-3 behind solid pitching from senior pitcher Mario Salazar before losing the second game 13-11.
According to head coach Arturo Ontiveros, Salazar allowed just three runs while striking out 10 Wildcats.
“(Mario) pitched awesome,” Ontiveros said. “When Mario’s on the mound, they don’t touch him ... they hit him a little bit better than the first time they faced him. But he kept them at bay the whole night, he pitched well. He’s in pretty good form now.”
At the plate, the Rams belted out 19 hits in the first game, and despite the loss, managed to connect for 12 hits in the second game.
The Rams (9-6, 7-3) continue the second half of their district schedule Saturday hosting the NMMI Colts in doubleheader action starting at 11 a.m.
