Retired Navy chief concerned vets overlooked

Local veterans and residents are set to gather Monday at Lawn Haven Memorial Gardens cemetery to honor and remember lives lost in defense of the nation.

“I don’t believe the veterans get enough recognition,” retired veteran Rick Robertson said. “Stop to think about it. Every generation starting with the Revolutionary War has had its war right on down the line. My war was Vietnam.”

The retired Navy chief petty officer said he believes it is important to teach future generations about the sacrifices made fighting for the United States and to pay homage to those who have died.

“There are so many young people that have no idea,” he said.

Monday’s ceremony, sponsored by the Joint Veterans’ Council, will include posting of colors by the Cannon Air Force Base Honor Guard, the national anthem sung by Jacquelyn Pinkett-Smith and the introduction of veterans of wars from World War II to modern day.

New Mexico Director of Veterans Services John Garcia has agreed to speak, Robertson said.

Veterans and active-duty personnel attending the Monday ceremony are encouraged to wear their uniforms and medals, he said.

The ceremony will close with a gun salute and the playing of taps.
