Police investigating armed robbery of video store

Portales Police Department officials responded to an armed robbery that occurred on Friday evening at Landall’s Box Office, located on South Avenue C.

According to Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry, the incident occurred at approximately 9:59 p.m. on Friday evening. At the time the robbery occurred, there was only one clerk in the store and no one was injured, he said.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, in his early 20’s, approximately 6 feet tall, with a heavy build and a thin mustache, Berry said.

The suspect pointed a handgun at the employee and demanded money, according to police. The money was given to the suspect from the cash box. The suspect fled with an undisclosed amount of money. The suspect was seen entering and leaving the store by witnesses, Berry said.

“We do know he was on foot and did run from the area on foot,” Berry said.

This is the third robbery to occur this year in Portales. According to police, a Hispanic female entered both Eastern Sunbelt Real Estate and Quality Sales and robbed the establishments at knife-point. The female is being described as being in her early 30’s.

Officials do not believe that the previous two robberies and the robbery that occurred on Friday are connected, Berry said.

“There’s nothing to give us an indication right know,” Berry said.

Witnesses at the scene stated that at the time of the robbery, the suspect was wearing a red shirt, dark pants and a white baseball type cap, Berry said.

Anyone who has information connected to the case should contact the Portales Police Department at 356-4404, Berry said.
