Officials investigating child's death

Law officers are investigating the death of a 9-month-old Roosevelt County girl who died Wednesday.

Officials will not say if they suspect the child is a victim of homicide.

“The cause of death has yet to be determined and the incident is still under investigation,” Roosevelt County Sheriff Daren Hooker said.

Hooker said paramedics from the Portales Fire Department were dispatched about 1 p.m. Wednesday to an address on East Sixth Street in Portales to attend to an unresponsive child.

The child was transported to Roosevelt General Hospital and then transferred by air ambulance to Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock where she was pronounced dead, the sheriff said.

Hooker said because of the ongoing investigation he would not release the name of the child or more details of what the investigation involved. He said late Thursday no one had been detained or arrested in connection with the investigation.

“I think it will be conducive to the investigation not to release further details,” Hooker said.

Hooker said he expected to be able to release further details on the investigation today.
