Serving Clovis, Portales and the Surrounding Communities
ROSWELL — Freshman Jaime Bargas and sophomore Marissa Best each scored twice in a losing effort as host Roswell defeated Portales 5-4 Tuesday.
“They played really well overall,” Portales soccer coach Traci Sievers said. “We had some lapses on defense in the first half where we got crossed over on the back side.”
Roswell took control early, taking a 3-1 lead at the half.
Bargas scored the Lady Rams lone first-half goal off a corner kick from Best.
Portales outscored Roswell High in the second half 3-2, as Bargas added another and Best scored twice in the second half.
“We came out and played a lot better in the second half,” Sievers said. “Offensively, we played a lot better than we have (lately).”
The Lady Rams also had a season-high 20 shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lizzie Armstrong collected 11 saves.
“It’s been real important to have somebody with her experience back in the goal,” Sievers said. “I think she really would rather play defender, but she understands that we need her in the goal.”
The Portales girls won their first game against Roswell High Saturday at home 3-2.
The Rams and Lady Rams host the Clovis junior varsity Thursday at the Portales Soccer Field at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
