Goddard dispatches Lady Rams

The Portales Lady Rams visit to Roswell Tuesday night lasted about an hour, as the Goddard Lady Rockets quickly dispatched the Portales girls in three games, 25-9, 25-14, 25-9.

“We just didn’t serve, receive or pass the ball,” Chavez said. “I think (Goddard) is better than us right now, but I don’t think they’re that much better than us.”

The Lady Rams were without senior outside hitter Bethany Self who had family obligations.

“That was a big hit. We just didn’t have the hitting from her that we (normally) have,” Chavez said. “Which is a shame. It shouldn’t be (that way). You hate to think that one person stepping out would make that big of a difference, but she did make a difference.

But Chavez also said that her girls weren’t passing the ball well.

“It wouldn’t matter, if we can’t get the ball, we couldn’t get it to her tonight anyway, so we just need to get to work and pass that ball better.”

The Lady Rams also lost to Goddard in three games last week, as part of a Roswell volleyball tournament, but Chavez says her girls played better in that match.

“We went three (games) with them last time, and (our scores) were in the 20’s in every game, and we couldn’t even play with them tonight,” Chavez said. “We just couldn’t pass the ball. We had no offense.”

The Lady Rams host Artesia at the Portales gymnasium Thursday night.

“We’ll go back and we’ll work our butts off,” Chavez said. “Because obviously the focus wasn’t there tonight. We’re a good team. We don’t lose like that if we’re focussed and we weren’t. So we get to work and really focus on things.”
