Fire destroys county home

A home west of Portales was destroyed by fire Sunday afternoon.

Occupants of the house escaped without injury, according to Portales Fire Department Battalion Chief Lance Hill.

Four fire units from PFD and one from Floyd responded around 5:30 p.m. to the report of a grass fire endangering a single-wide mobile home at 370B South Roosevelt Road U.

The fire quickly spread to the structure and by the time firefighters arrived the mobile home was fully involved in flame, according to Hill.

According to family members of the victim, the home was occupied at the time by Kenneth and Kasie Linger and their child.

Hill said the structure was a complete loss.

He said that the apparent cause of the grass fire, which was less than one acre, was ashes from a woodburning stove.
