The National Weather Service has posted a winter storm watch for Thursday night and Friday for New Mexico’s northwestern mountains.
Lea County will be under a winter storm watch Thursday and Thursday night.
The unsettled weather is being ushered in by a storm moving east from the California coast toward the Great Basin.
A cold front was pressing south Wednesday across New Mexico’s eastern plains, heralding another round of chilly air.
The Rio Grande Valley likely will be buffeted by east canyon wind Wednesday night.
Scattered mountain snow showers and valley rain will develop over the south and west late Wednesday night, then spread north and east Thursday and Friday.
Snow could accumulate on higher terrain, mostly the southern San Juan Mountains in Rio Arriba County.
A mixture of rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain could fall on the east-central and southeastern plains Thursday and early Friday.
A more substantial surge of moisture will affect the state Saturday and Sunday as the storm over the Great Basin moves east across the southern Rocky Mountains.
Snow levels will fall as colder air moves into New Mexico.
The state should have drier weather beginning early next week.
