Kiwanis chili supper slated for Friday

Portales Kiwanis Club members are looking to heat things up at their annual chili supper from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Fellowship Hall at First United Methodist Church, 200 S. Ave. C in Portales.

The club is offering traditional beef chili as well as vegetarian varieties, along with a variety of choices of drink and dessert. Tickets, available at the door or from members, are $6 for adults and $4 for children under 12.

This year’s chili supper is dedicated to the memory of George and Clytie Calton, who owned Calton’s Furniture, said club member Bill Wood. Clytie was killed in a natural gas explosion in January and George died in 2001.

Wood said George Calton came up with the idea to start the chili supper over 40 years ago and organized and led the kitchen crew for many years. The couple continued to support the event, even after George was no longer able to participate.

According to Wood, Kiwanis International is a service club with units in every state in the U.S. and many countries. Members efforts are united under the theme “Serving the Children of the World.”

Proceeds from the supper will support local children through projects such as the Little Olympics track meet held for Dora, Elida and Floyd elementary schools, the summer swim meet at the Portales Municipal Pool, AYSO soccer scholarships, and the Roosevelt County Fair Pet Show.

The club also raises funds to support Eastern New Mexico University scholarships, Habitat For Humanity, the Portales Literacy Council and the regional science fair at ENMU.

Weekly club meetings are held on Tuesday at the Campus Union Building at ENMU.
