GOLDEN, Colo. — Two outs away from a four-game series sweep, the roof fell in Sunday on the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team.
Colorado School of Mines erased the last of an 8-2 deficit with a five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh to salvage a 9-8 win and a doubleheader split with the Greyhounds. ENMU (6-2) won Sunday’s first game 8-6.
The Hounds swept Mines 20-11 and 2-0 on Saturday.
Leading 8-4, left-hander Antwhan Yazzie relieved ENMU starter Thomas Green to begin the seventh and promptly retired the Orediggers’ Nick Wong on a flyout. He then hit a batter and issued a walk, and was replaced by Jonathon Wise.
A single and a bases-loaded walk made it 8-5 before Mines catcher Anthony Siderius greeted ENMU closer Keith Balderaz (0-1) with a game-tying, three-run double down the left field line. After another walk, Michael Svejcar singled home pinch-runner Jonathan Trivisonno from second with the winning run.
Siderius, who drove in five runs, cut ENMU’s lead to 8-4 with a two-run homer in the sixth. The Hounds took advantage of four errors by the Orediggers (1-3) to score four unearned runs.
In the opener, sophomore first baseman Seth Clabaugh’s two-run homer in the top of the second wiped out a 1-0 Mines lead and the Hounds stayed in front the rest of the way.
Clabaugh went 3-for-5 to lead a 12-hit attack, while catcher Freddy Carmona and shortstop Kevin Thompson each had two hits and two RBIs.
Junior right-hander Evan Orsak (2-0) earned the win with two innings in relief of starter Tyler Doughty before Balderaz, the last of five ENMU pitchers, struck out two in the ninth for his second save of the season.
The Hounds begin Lone Star Conference play on Friday with a three-day, four-game series against Northeastern State at Tahlequah, Okla.
