Flag salute reception set for Tuesday

New Mexicans are reminded of unity and friendship when reciting the salute to the flag of the state of New Mexico. The salute was created by Portales women of the Ellen W. Jones Chapter, No. 1022, United Daughters of the Confederacy and adopted by the legislature in 1963.

At 6 p.m. Tuesday, a community reception will be held at the Memorial Building in Portales honoring original UDC members: Jan Compton-Ross, Jane Mauk Hilliard, Margaret Smith and Willie Vale Quade for their contribution to the creation and adoption of the salute, according to a press release.

Following the reception, at 7 p.m, the regularly scheduled city of Portales council meeting will be held in the auditorium of the Memorial Building with the honor guard and Boy Scouts conducting a special presentation for the honorees and a program to include guest speakers. Special proclamations, awards and plaques will be presented by the mayor and council to these women and the chapter.

The event is open to the public.
