RCSO makes scrap metal theft arrest

Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested two Portales men Friday in connection with the theft of scrap metal from a rural Roosevelt County residence, according to a RCSO press release.

Sanford Long, 28, and Steven Long, 51, both of Portales were arrested at a scrap metal recycling center in Clovis after a witness provided information about a vehicle that was possibly involved in a theft of scrap metal from a residence on South Roosevelt Road 4.

Deputies, along with Clovis Police Department officers located the vehicle at the center and arrested the pair for disposing of stolen property and booked them into the Curry County Adult Detention Center, according to the release.

Roosevelt County Sheriff Darren Hooker said warrants for the additional charge of larceny are being sought against the two.

While scrap metal and copper wire thefts had been prevalent last year, Hooker said the numbers are down at the current time. He credited the awareness and watchfulness of residents with the decrease.
