Texico grad aims to succeed

Bryn Mayfield, Texico High School’s 2008 graduating class valedictorian, is planning to leave her hometown and a life focused on sports to attend Kansas State University.

While juggling school work, sports and FFA, the senior feels her last year of high school has been busy, yet manageable. Mayfield said she attempted to set an example for the younger students when it came to priorities.

“I hope that they learn how to lead well, stay out of trouble, and keep their grades up, even though we were always gone and going along with sports. That (academic success) is still more important,” Mayfield said. “It may be a little harder with sports, but a lot of the teachers (at Texico High) are coaches so they are gone a lot of the time, too. It just helps with them knowing your situation.”

Mayfield is one of 35 Texico seniors scheduled to graduate Saturday.

An all-state setter in volleyball and a guard on the basketball team, Mayfield helped Texico win back-to-back Class 2A titles in both sports.

Although she joined her first sports team in the third grade and has spent most of her free time in a gym, Mayfield decided to focus on her studies when she arrives at Kansas State.

“I really wanted to go to a big school, a Division 1 school, and if you play sports there it’s your life. I just really didn’t want to do that. I just wanted to focus on school, and I can also play intramural sports. I just won’t play for the school. I can still be involved in sports, just not as intensely,” Mayfield said.

She will be working toward an engineering degree, and received all of her college scholarships based on academic achievements. She hopes to join a sorority, and enjoy some free time.

“I want to join a sorority, because you can make a lot of good friends, and I think it would be a lot of fun. I didn’t have much free time. I really like to read a lot and just hanging out with friends. We go to the lake every chance we get and go the movies. Yeah, but I didn’t have that much free time,” Mayfield said.
