Third and Kilgore to be four-way stop

The New Mexico Department of Transportation District 2 will be installing four-way stop signs at the intersection of N.M. 88 (East Third) and Kilgore in Portales. Installation will be complete Monday, according to a press release.

The NMDOT traffic study done last month at the intersection determined that additional safety measures were needed for the intersection, with increased traffic volume on Kilgore to a 40/60 percent splits. Sight triangle issues and the proximity of the local high school were also identified as reasons.

A NMDOT spokesperson said temporary caution signs will be in place to warn drivers of the new stop signs.

Local officials requested a study of the intersection during the state transportation commission meeting April 17, to determine if the intersection warranted a four-way stop.
